What to bring
Papers to bring
- The original registration certificate (RC), the insurance policy and the pollution (PUC) certificate
- Forms 29 and 30, signed by the seller and the buyer
- Identity and address proof of the seller and the buyer (Aadhaar, for the online application)
- If there was a loan on the vehicle: the financier's no-objection certificate and Form 35
- A pencil print of the chassis number, if the transport office asks for it
Where to go
Sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary, then filed with the transfer application on the Vahan portal (parivahan.gov.in) and at the registering authority that holds the vehicle's record (the RTA, or the SDM's registration office).
Fee
The transfer fee and any tax due are paid online on Vahan; the e-Stamp paper and the attestation fee are paid at the counter. Ask for today's amounts.
Good to know
- Within the same state, the seller reports the sale within 14 days and the buyer applies for the transfer within 30 days (Motor Vehicles Act, section 50).
- Write the exact date and time of the hand-over: challans and accidents before it are the seller's, after it the buyer's.
- Until Vahan shows the new owner, challans may still reach the seller; the seller should check that the transfer is done.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
