What to bring
Papers to bring
- The death certificate of the deceased (photocopy; the original to show)
- The pensioner's pension payment order (PPO), or, for a death in service, the last pay slip and the office's details
- Your identity proof, and proof of your relationship: the marriage certificate for a spouse, the birth certificate for a child
- For a son or daughter: proof of age, and of studies, disability or marital status as the rules ask; for a parent: proof of income
- The first page of the passbook of your own account for the pension
- Passport-size photographs and specimen signatures, as the claim form asks
Where to go
Sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary, then filed with the claim form: for a death in service, at the office where the employee last served; for a pensioner, with the bank or treasury that paid the pension, or the office that sanctioned it. Where the PPO already names the spouse, the bank usually starts the family pension on the death certificate and a claim.
Fee
An affidavit made only to receive a pension is usually free of stamp duty; the attestation fee is paid at the counter. Ask there for today's amounts.
Good to know
- Who gets the family pension first, and the conditions of age, marriage and income, come from the rules that governed the deceased; the office applies them.
- Report a remarriage, marriage, job or change in income at once; any excess paid is recovered or adjusted, as the affidavit says.
- To keep the pension going, give the yearly life certificate, and the non-remarriage affidavit where asked (the app has it).
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
