What to bring
Papers to bring
- Aadhaar card or another photo identity proof (photocopy; the original to show)
- The latest property-tax receipt or bill showing the property ID, and the latest water and sewer bill
- After a sale: the registered sale deed (photocopy; the original to show)
- After a death: the death certificate, proof of your relationship, and the other heirs' written consent with their identity proofs
- The municipal body's own form for a change of name, if it has one
Where to go
Sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary, then filed with the application for the change of name at the office of the municipal corporation or council, or online where its portal takes such applications. The body may verify the facts before it enters the change.
Fee
The municipal body charges its own transfer fee and any arrears; the e-Stamp paper and the attestation fee are paid at the counter. Ask for today's amounts.
Good to know
- Pay the house tax and the water bills up to date first: most bodies change the name only when no dues are pending.
- The entry is only for the municipal record; it does not decide who owns the property, as the affidavit says.
- After a sale or a death, move the electricity connection too (the app has an affidavit for that).
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
Stamp paper
Punjab: affidavits are usually typed on e-stamp paper (buy it at an authorised e-stamp centre; check the current duty there) and sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary. Many state services now accept a self-declaration instead.
Haryana: use e-stamp paper (egrashry / authorised vendors; check the current duty) and swear before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
Chandigarh: e-stamp paper from an authorised centre (check the current duty); sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
