Date: 12-10-2026
What to bring
Papers to bring
- A copy of the rent agreement
- The landlord's PAN card, where the employer asks for it for house rent allowance
- Proof of payment: the bank or UPI record of each rent paid
Where to go
Signed by the landlord and given to the tenant, monthly or for a period; for house rent allowance, the tenant gives copies to the employer.
Fee
Plain paper is enough; a receipt above the amount set in the stamp law carries a revenue stamp, signed across by the person receiving the money.
Good to know
- Pay the rent by bank transfer where you can: the bank record backs the receipt if the employer or the tax department asks.
- The landlord shows the rent as income in the tax return; rent paid to a close relative is accepted only if it is really paid.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
Stamp paper
A receipt for more than ₹5,000 usually carries a one-rupee revenue stamp, signed across.
