WILL
I, Balwant Kaur widow of late Shri Jagir Singh, aged about 67 years, resident of Village Kalyanpur, Tehsil and District Amarnagar, Punjab, being of sound mind and in good health, and acting of my own free will without any pressure, make this my last will. I revoke all wills and codicils made by me earlier.
1.That after my death, my property shall go as follows:
(a)to my nephew Gurdev Singh: my agricultural land, Khewat No. 77, Village Kalyanpur;
(b)to my grand-niece Simran Kaur: my gold jewellery and the money in my bank accounts;
2.That all my other property, movable and immovable, whether now owned or acquired later, shall go to my nephew Gurdev Singh.
3.That I have made this will knowingly, after understanding it fully, and nobody else shall have any claim on my property against it.
Signed by the above-named testator as her last will in our presence, both of us being present at the same time, and we have signed as witnesses in her presence.

What to bring
Papers to bring
- Aadhaar card or another photo identity proof (photocopy; the original to show)
- A list of your property with its details: the registry or jamabandi (fard) of land and houses, and bank, deposit and other accounts
- The full name, relation and address of each person who is to receive something, and of the executor
- Two witnesses who take nothing under the will (nor do their husbands or wives), each with a photo identity proof
- Two recent passport-size photographs, if the will is to be registered
- A doctor's certificate that you are of sound mind, if you are very old or ill (advisable, not required)
Where to go
Signed by you in the presence of two witnesses, who sign it in your presence (s.63 Indian Succession Act). It needs no stamp paper. Registration is optional: if wanted, you go in person, with the witnesses, to the Sub-Registrar's office.
Fee
No stamp duty is payable on a will. If it is registered, the Sub-Registrar's registration fee is paid there; ask for today's amount. The deed writer's or lawyer's fee is separate.
Good to know
- Keep the original safe and tell the executor or a trusted person where it is; a will can also be deposited with the Registrar in a sealed cover (s.42 Registration Act).
- You can change or cancel a will at any time while you live: see "Codicil (change to a will)", or make a new will that cancels the old one.
- Let the witnesses see you sign, and sign in your presence; a gift to a witness, or to a witness's husband or wife, is void (s.67 Indian Succession Act).
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
Stamp paper
A will needs no stamp paper. Registration is optional but advisable; two witnesses must sign.
