What to bring
Papers to bring
- The death certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths (original or attested copy, as the insurer asks)
- The original policy bonds
- The claimant's identity and address proof, PAN and photographs, and a cancelled cheque or the first page of the passbook
- For an accident: the FIR, the post-mortem report, the inquest report and, later, the final police report
- For an illness: the hospital records, the discharge or death summary, and the treating doctor's certificate on the insurer's form
- Without a nominee: proof that you are a legal heir, such as a succession certificate, as the insurer asks
Where to go
At the insurer's branch that services the policy (or any branch, or its website); get an acknowledgement with the claim number.
Fee
There is usually no charge for making a claim; be wary of anyone who asks for money to get it passed.
Good to know
- Tell the insurer as soon as you can; a late intimation can slow the claim.
- If the policy had run for less than three years, the insurer may check the proposal form and medical history before paying.
- If the claim is refused or delayed, complain first to the insurer's grievance officer, and then to the Insurance Ombudsman.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
