Subject: Stop payment of a cheque on account No. 00000067890
Sir/Madam,
I hold savings account No. 00000067890 with your branch. Please stop payment of the following cheque drawn on this account:
| No. | Cheque No. | Date | Amount | In favour of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 000123 | 08-10-2026 | ₹25,000 | Kalyanpur Fabrics |
The reason is that the cheque has been lost.
Please record the stop-payment instruction at once and confirm it to me in writing. The charges for it, if any, may be debited to my account.
Thanking you,

What to bring
Papers to bring
- Stop payment: the number, date and amount of each cheque (from the cheque-book counterfoils)
- Closing: the unused cheque leaves, the debit card and the passbook, and the details of the account to receive the balance
- New address: a proof of it, such as the Aadhaar card, passport, a utility bill or the rent agreement
- Nomination: the bank's nomination form, with each nominee's name, relationship and age or date of birth, and a witness where the form asks
- Your identity proof; in a joint account every holder signs
Where to go
Hand it in at the branch that keeps the account and get a receiving on your copy. Many banks also take stop-payment, mobile and nominee requests through net banking or their app.
Fee
Banks charge for some services, such as stopping payment or closing an account soon after opening it; ask the branch for its current charges.
Good to know
- Stopping payment does not end a debt: if the cheque was given for money owed, the payee may still file a cheque-bounce complaint.
- For a lost or stolen cheque book, have every missing leaf stopped, and report a theft to the police.
- Keep the nomination up to date: after a death it usually lets the bank pay the nominee quickly, who holds the money for the legal heirs.
