What to bring
Papers to bring
- Every receipt, bank transfer slip, UPI screenshot or cheque record of the money paid (photocopies; keep the originals safe)
- Whatever the agent gave or sent: the agreement, visiting card, offer or admission letters, visa papers, and printouts of messages
- The agent's licence or registration number, office address and phone numbers, and a photograph of the office or signboard, if you have them
- Your Aadhaar card or another photo identity proof (photocopy; the original to show)
- If the visa or job was for a family member, a copy of that person's passport
- Copies of any earlier complaints and their receipts
Where to go
Hand it in at the office of the SSP, SP or Commissioner of Police (or send it by registered post) and get a receiving or complaint number. In Punjab a copy can also go to the Deputy Commissioner, who licenses travel agents and immigration consultants.
Fee
There is no fee for giving a complaint to the police.
Good to know
- Before paying an agent, check the licence at the Deputy Commissioner's office (Punjab) and, for a job abroad, the recruiting agent's registration on the government's eMigrate portal.
- Never leave original passports or certificates with an agent; if the agent has them, list them in the complaint.
- If no FIR is registered, an advocate can apply to the Magistrate to order an investigation (Section 175(3) BNSS). Getting the money back may also need a civil suit; ask an advocate.
