What to bring
Papers to bring
- Identity and address proof of the husband and of the wife (photocopies; the originals to show)
- Proof of each one's age: the matriculation or birth certificate
- The wedding card, photographs of the ceremony showing both of you, and the gurdwara's or temple's certificate, if one was given
- Passport-size photographs of both, and a joint photograph, as the Registrar asks
- Two witnesses who attended the wedding, each with an identity proof
- For one who was married before: the divorce decree, or the earlier spouse's death certificate
Where to go
Both sign before an Oath Commissioner or Notary; it is then filed with the application to the Registrar of Marriages, usually at the tehsil or the SDM office (through the Sewa Kendra in Punjab or the Saral portal in Haryana). The couple and the witnesses usually have to appear in person.
Fee
The Registrar's fee for registration and the certificate, the e-Stamp paper and the attestation fee are paid at the counter; ask there for today's amounts.
Good to know
- A Sikh couple married by Anand Karaj can ask for registration under the Anand Marriage Act: see the app's memorandum for registering an Anand Karaj.
- If the time for registering has passed, a late fee is charged; use the app's affidavit for late registration of marriage instead.
- Keep several certified copies of the certificate: passports, visas and name changes need it.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
Stamp paper
Punjab: affidavits are usually typed on e-stamp paper (buy it at an authorised e-stamp centre; check the current duty there) and sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary. Many state services now accept a self-declaration instead.
Haryana: use e-stamp paper (egrashry / authorised vendors; check the current duty) and swear before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
Chandigarh: e-stamp paper from an authorised centre (check the current duty); sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
