What to bring
Papers to bring
- The sponsor's identity proof and passport (photocopies)
- Proof of the relationship with the person sponsored
- The sponsor's income proof: income-tax returns, salary slips or Form 16; for a farmer, the jamabandi (fard) and J-forms
- Bank statements, fixed deposit receipts or a loan sanction letter, and a chartered accountant's statement of funds if asked
- The admission or invitation letter of the person sponsored
Where to go
Signed before a Notary (embassies and universities usually want a Notary), then put in the visa or admission file. Some embassies and universities have their own sponsorship form instead.
Fee
The e-Stamp paper and the Notary's fee are paid at the counter; a chartered accountant charges separately for a statement of funds. Ask for today's amounts.
Good to know
- Keep every figure the same as in the bank statements and returns: visa officers compare them.
- Visa officers often look at how long the money has been in the account; be ready to explain any large recent deposit.
- For use abroad, the embassy may want the paper apostilled by the Ministry of External Affairs; ask which attestation it needs.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
Stamp paper
Punjab: affidavits are usually typed on e-stamp paper (buy it at an authorised e-stamp centre; check the current duty there) and sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary. Many state services now accept a self-declaration instead.
Haryana: use e-stamp paper (egrashry / authorised vendors; check the current duty) and swear before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
Chandigarh: e-stamp paper from an authorised centre (check the current duty); sworn before an Oath Commissioner or Notary.
