What to bring
Papers to bring
- The whole set of challan copies already given to you
- A list of what is missing, unreadable or incomplete, page by page, checked against the challan's own index
- The main case: its number and year, the court, the names of the parties and the next date
Where to go
Filed through your advocate in the Magistrate's court where the challan is, before the arguments on the charge; the court directs the prosecution to supply the copies.
Fee
The copies under section 230 are free to the accused; any court fee or welfare stamp on the application is put on as the court office directs.
Good to know
- Ask before the arguments on the charge: the law asks the Magistrate to supply the copies within fourteen days of the accused's appearance.
- Copies may be given in electronic form, such as on a pen drive; keep the set safe, as your defence rests on it.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
