What to bring
Papers to bring
- Proof of age of both of you: the matriculation or birth certificate, or a passport (the man must be 21 or older, the woman 18 or older)
- Identity proofs of both of you, with proof of address (photocopies; the originals to show)
- For a divorced partner, a certified copy of the divorce decree; for a widow or widower, the late spouse's death certificate
- Three witnesses, each with an identity proof and proof of address
- Passport-size photographs of both of you (and of the witnesses, if the office asks)
- The receipt or a copy of the notice of intended marriage given earlier
Where to go
Signed by the bride, the bridegroom and the three witnesses before the Marriage Officer of the district (usually at the Deputy Commissioner's or SDM's office), after the 30-day notice period, and countersigned by the Marriage Officer.
Fee
Plain paper is enough; the Marriage Officer's fee under the state's rules is paid at the office. Ask there for today's amount.
Good to know
- The declarations are signed only after the 30 days of the notice, if no objection is upheld; if the marriage does not take place within three months of the notice, a fresh notice is needed.
- Every statement must be true: the declaration itself warns that a false one is punishable.
- After the marriage, the Marriage Officer enters it in the Marriage Certificate Book, which you and the witnesses also sign.
Papers and fees can change. Check with the office before you go. Guidance only, not yet reviewed by a lawyer.
